The Wharves, Bundaberg

Possibly a South Sea Island labour vessel at the wharf in Bundaberg [John Oxley Library neg. 62672]
"At the wharves are several steamers, while light rakish looking but stoutly built sailing vessels, brigantine rigged, are buoyed midway in the stream or made fast alongshore. Even to the uninitiated these vessels look something out of the common. They are the labour schooners connected with the South Sea Island trade, and are awaiting instructions to return a number of labourers to their island homes, and have their places taken by recruits for the return voyage."
Queenslander, 19 October 1895
Bundaberg acquired port status in 1871 and the town reach of the river became the Port of Bundaberg. As the town developed, a substantial length of the town reach became occupied by wharves.
