The Millaquin Sugar Mill is situated about four kilometres from the centre of Bundaberg and was established in the early 1880s on the banks of the Burnett River.

"In January 1882 machinery arrived from England, and by October the long anticipated refinery stood ready for action. A celebratory ball held in the refinery itself launched the venture."

Bundaberg History and People, Janette Nolan, St Lucia, UQ Press, 1978

The mill was the first in the area and, with the great increases in sugar growing from the 1880s onwards, more mills quickly followed.

A huge set-back occurred in April 1927 when a large section of the refinery was destroyed by fire.
