On the 10th October 1886 His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dunne, the Bishop of Brisbane laid the foundation stone of the new Catholic Church in Bundaberg.

The building was designed by F.D.G. Stanley, who was responsible for the plans of many nineteenth century buildings, and who two years later became the foundation president of the Queensland Institute of Architects.

The Church was constructed in brick by E. Boyle, a Bundaberg contractor and was completed and consecrated in 1888.

"The Roman Catholic Church is a heavy, rather gloomy-looking edifice, with bright internal fittings..."

Queenslander, 19 October 1895
