Parliament House, Brisbane

Parliament House
[John Oxley Library neg. 33169]

The foundation stone of this French Renaissance style building was laid in 1865. It was designed by Charles Tiffin, being the winning entry in an Australia-wide competition. The building overlooks the nearby Botanic Gardens and parklands, and in this image Parliament House is viewed from beyond the lily pond in the Gardens.

Parliament House Interior
[John Oxley Library neg. 66948]

This image shows the Legislative Council chamber in 1869, shortly after the completion of Parliament House. The Council, the upper house of the Queensland Parliament, was eventually abolished in 1922, so the chamber is now used only for formal occasions. The chamber was lit by gas lighting and the original furniture is thought to have been manufactured by John Petrie's firm in 1870.

View from the roof of Parliament House
[John Oxley Library neg. 143669]

A photograph taken in about 1875 by G.P.Wright. It was taken from the roof of Parliament House looking over the Domain towards Government House.

The roof of Parliament House was made of zinc and imported from England in a prefabricated state. It was reassembled on site with the aid of a numbered system and models.

1893 Flood from Parliament House, Brisbane
[John Oxley Library neg. 146803]

This shows much the same view from the roof of Parliament House as the previous picture. Here, however, the 1893 floods have encroached upon large sections of the old Domain area surrounding Government House.
