Book objects

Artists sometimes use books to create sculptures, or they may use other materials to create works that share some characteristics of a book.

The created works may refer back to early forms of the book such as scrolls or clay tablets, or may take the shape of another object on which components of a book have been imposed. The form may suggest the content, as in Anne-Maree Hunter's Tower of Babel or the content may suggest the form, as it did for Scott McCarney's Memory loss.

Some book objects are large enough for the reader to enter and view from inside. At the other extreme of the scale is Christine Kermaire's World libraries of artist' books: 1 april 2007 - 2017 which uses a tiny box of 'oral care strips' to suggest a microfilm copy of all the artists' books in the world.
