Collaborations
The key [to collaboration] is to not to predetermine the outcome: it is allowing ourselves to step together, to dance and to take the journey. Dianne Fogwell
Making books is a complex process - the combining of ideas, illustration, design, text, printing, and binding as well as working out the mechanics of the book.
Because of this, books are perfect vehicles for collaboration, often calling upon and melding the skills of diverse practitioners like artists, writers, binders, printers, photographers and papermakers. Occasionally one artist has all the necessary skills. Sometimes they need to rely on others. Often they choose to collaborate because of the additional benefits it brings. Combining disparate skills and bouncing ideas off each other, they may come up with a more interesting solution than they would alone.
Collaborations can be simple, involving an artist and a writer working closely together, as in Drawing by Bruno Leti and Chris Wallace Crabbe, or they can involve global communities such as Kay Faulkner's Indulge which has contributions of materials and thoughts from people in five countries. Some artists regard every book as a collaboration, even if the other participants, such as the papermaker, don't know that they are involved.
