In the 1840s, Chinese people were recruited and welcomed in Queensland as a source of cheap labour in rural areas. Forty years later they were regarded as "pests" to be "exterminated". The white settlers resented the fact that Chinese tenants farming their land had made such a success of their fruit growing businesses. What a shame that they didn’t embrace the Chinese and learn how to cook and use the ingredients they could grow.
