Humanities: Jackie Huggins, AM
When she was young, Jackie Huggins travelled beyond the cane fields of Ayr by pouring over maps and books in her local library. Over the last decade, Huggins’ work on reconciliation, literacy, women’s issues and social justice has taken her to places that she once dreamed of visiting.
Although Jackie Huggins did not grow up in a house full of books, she has written two of her own. Auntie Rita (written with her mother, Rita Huggins) and Sistergirl tell of Indigenous women’s experiences in Queensland. Huggins is of the Bidjara (Central Queensland) and Birri-Gubba Juru (North Queensland) peoples.
Jackie Huggins is currently Deputy Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit at the University of Queensland, and Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia.
