Science: Professor Ian Frazer
Infectious diseases specialist, Ian Frazer wants Australians to ‘catch my disease’. Since he started work as a medical researcher in Edinburgh 25 years ago, Frazer has been infected with a need to do good for others.
In 2006 he was named Australian of the Year for his part in inventing the technology that has led to the first vaccine to prevent a cancer. In the next few years, women all over the world will be able to be vaccinated against cervical cancer.
Ian Frazer is continuing his ground-breaking work as Director of the Diamantina Institute for Immunology and Cancer Research, a research centre of the University of Queensland at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.
Frazer balances his love for science with his passion for red wine, opera and classical guitar.
