Portrait of Peter BeattiePolitics: Peter Beattie

Peter Beattie always showed leadership. Born in Sydney, he was the youngest of seven children and was raised by his grandmother on the Atherton Tablelands.  He was school captain and dux of Atherton State High School before moving to Brisbane in 1971 to study arts and law.

He supported himself through university by working as a taxi driver and in a canning factory. These experiences, along with working in law, helped prepare him for the role of State Secretary of the Queensland Labor Party.

In 1989 he was elected to the Queensland Parliament and was Premier of Queensland from 26 June, 1998 – 2007 winning an historic fourth term in September 2006.
