Sport: Jason Akermanis
Fast. Flamboyant. Fun. Jason Akermanis was one of the best known Brisbane Lions players for almost a decade.
Akermanis was picked to play for the Brisbane Bears in 1994 while in his final year at Nudgee College, a private school known for its rugby union credentials. At the age of 14 Akermanis had a serious rollerblading accident and was told he would never play contact sport again.
This dire prediction did not stop him from winning the Brownlow medal in 2001. This was also the year in which he married Megan, having learned Auslan (sign language) so he could communicate with her parents.
