Ecclesiastical work
In 1904 Robin Dods was appointed Diocesan Architect for the Anglican Church Diocese of Brisbane, thereby securing one of the most prestigious commissions then on offer. St John’s Cathedral was more ambitious than any stone Gothic building ever attempted in Australia and while the design was the last work of the late celebrated English architect JL Pearson, it required special skills to ensure its construction reflected the designer’s intent.

Importantly, the role included designing a group of buildings to accompany the cathedral. In total Dods designed 35 ecclesiastical works, not all of which were built. He is best known for a number of beautifully resolved timber chapels and parish churches as well as for modern brick edifices such as St Brigid’s, Red Hill, which drew on the direction of the best modern English work and were much admired. Subsequent designs, such as the chapel for the Mater Hospital (unrealised), show further development of the ideas apparent in St Brigid’s.
St Brigid's Church
Because its position on a ridge close to Brisbane city makes it so visible, this parish church is one of Dods’ best-known works. A new church had been discussed for about 15 years prior to this design being accepted, and its red brick form was a radical departure from other Catholic buildings of the time. The influences in its powerful geometry were a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic elements, embellished with classical motifs. Its fortified appearance recalls medieval southern France, yet is refreshingly new in its conception.
The original design had a tower over the sacristy which was never completed. Designed in 1913, just before Dods left Brisbane for Sydney, it was completed at a cost of £13,750 by Thos Keenan. It is considered the finest of its kind in Australia.
