Behind the Lines: The year’s best cartoons 2009
Behind the Lines: the year’s best cartoons 2009 was a National Museum of Australia touring exhibition, presented by the State Library of Queensland. Through the eyes of Australia’s top cartoonists, the exhibition captured the twists and turns of another eventful year in Australian politics.
Artists include Bill Leak, Paul Zanetti, Alan Moir, Warren Brown, Dan Boermans, Cathy Wilcox, John Shakespeare and Queensland cartoonists and illustrators Sean Leahy, Jonathan Bentley and Neil Matterson.
The exhibition featured 87 cartoons, tracing major events of the year, covering seven major political themes:
- Black Saturday bushfires
- Fighting recession
- Leaders
- Life in opposition
- Carbon trading
- Living with the dragon, about Australia’s relationship with China
- News of the day, including the controversial ‘ute-gate’ scandal, the swine flu pandemic and the arrival of refugees
Exhibition visitors were invited to choose their favourite cartoon for the People's Choice Award, a $1000 prize for the cartoonist with most popular work in the exhibition.
