Contextual vessels - Appropriation, etching and artists' books

(Lisa Schneidewin)

Purpose

Students will develop an understanding of appropriation in contemporary art and how this reflects the postmodern era we live in by engaging with artworks in the form of books as vessels.

Description

Students research and critically analyse artworks associated with the contemporary practice of appropriation and artists' books. They make and display their own artists' book, experimenting with the practice and technique of appropriation, drypoint etching and digital manipulation.

Procedure

This unit is implemented for Year 10 students over an eight to ten week period (approx 45 lessons). Activities are based on a constructivist (student-centred) approach organised into three phases of learning and assessment.

A knowledge of contemporary art and the practice of appropriation is beneficial for teachers. A background knowledge of artists' books within the context of postmodernism is also beneficial. Students need no prior knowledge in visual arts, although it is assumed with the development of this unit. The learning sequence is outlined in the Unit Plan [new window PDF document 105 kb]
