Artists' Books: a guide to writing an analysis of art work
(Julie Goss)
Purpose
- Study the elements and principles of design
- Promote student visual skills and documentation of ideas
- Explore images and styles of imagery
- Introduce Artists' books and develop own student work.
Description
The nine week unit encourages Year 9 students to explore the history of the book, artists' books, book construction and the visual arts concepts of abstraction, composition and symbolism. This knowledge may be applied to the development of two artists' books of their own - an altered book and an artist book using bookmaking and binding techniques.
Procedure
By the end of this unit, students will complete two artists' books and theory assignment. Students will add content to a second hand book of their choice, creating an altered book and a second book culminating in a collection of drawings, prints and any other collection of papers/leaves combined together to create an artists' book. The theory component invites students to study the historical concept of the book and explore those artists who use text and the form of a book in their artwork.
