Artists' books of peace

(Toni Bowden)

Purpose

To research and create artists' books, collaboratively and individually, using examples in the collection of the State Library of Queensland as models for responding to slogans and symbols associated with peace.

Description

The unit will take eight one-hour lessons to complete in a term. Initially students will construct a venetian blind book collaboratively, then create an individual artist's book, responding to slogans, lyrics or poetry on the theme of peace. Artists' books from the Australian Library of Art collections will act as models for certain elements.

Activities in this unit are based on a learner-centred approach and are organised into three phases of learning.

Procedure

It would be useful for teachers to have a moderate knowledge of the range of artists' books. This may be acquired through external web links and a visit to the State Library of Queensland.
