Music

Queenslanders have access to a number of authoritative, subscription-only databases that are not available through Google or other free search engines.

Offsite access
To access these databases away from the library - from any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you must be a Queensland resident and: 

  • own a State Library e-services card (apply for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your card); 
    OR
  • be a member of a Queensland public library with a QPL account (register for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification)

African American Music Reference Full text

Offers the first comprehensive coverage of blues, jazz, spirituals, civil rights songs, slave songs, minstrelsy, rhythm and blues, gospel, and other forms of black American musical expression. This release includes 4,300 essays and images from 125 sources, over 34,497 pages. You can also access African American Music Reference through the Music Online interface.

American Song is an eclectic collection of over 60,000 sound recordings from America’s past and present. Includes songs by Americans from all walks of life: native Americans, immigrants, slaves, pioneers and cowboys, and covers civil rights, prohibition, the revolutionary war, the civil war and more. Genres include country, folk, bluegrass, western, old time, American Indian, blues, gospel, shape note singing, doo-wop, motown, R&B, soul, funk, and others.

Classical Music Library Audio icon

The world's largest multi-label database of Classical music recordings for listening. Coverage of repertoire is increasing as new labels are added, with a focus on both recordings from the past and new releases. Database provides a search facility as well as ability to browse by composer, artist, conductor, ensemble, instrument, genre, period and label.

Classical Music Reference Library Full text

Brings together more than 40,000 pages of essential reference materials, including Baker's Dictionary of Music, Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, and Baker's Student Encyclopedia of Music. Comprehensive coverage of all classical genres, spanning music from Medieval to the 21st century, with definitions of musical terms and extensive biographical information. In addition there are biographies, chronologies, primary source readings, critical texts, full text from other major reference works, biographical information, score and lyric excerpts, musical and notational terms, and photographs and images of people, instruments, and ensembles.

Classical Scores Library

Contains hundreds of thousands of pages of the most important classical music scores, manuscripts, and previously unpublished material, allowing for the study and analysis of more than 8,000 musical scores. Many items have associated audio tracks in Classical Music Library, so that subscribers to both collections can listen to a recording online while following along with the full score. Classical Scores Library allows users to access multiple types of scores across various composers, genres, and time periods.

Contemporary World Music Audio icon

Contemporary World Music contains the sounds of all regions from every continent. Over 55,000 tracks include important genres such as reggae, worldbeat, neo-traditional, world fusion, Balkanic jazz, African film, bollywood, Arab swing and jazz. Traditional music includes Indian classical, fado, flamenco, klezmer, zydeco, gospel, gagaku, and more. These more modern interpretations complement the traditional styles found in the Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries database.

Dance in Video Film icon

Dance in Video offers more than 500 hours of streaming video which covers ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, experimental, and improvisational dance, as well as forerunners of the forms and the pioneers of modern concert dance. Included are classic performances from top ballet companies; experimental works from up-and-coming dance troupes; documentaries by and about leading choreographers; videos on dance training; and other items covering a wide range of twentieth-century dance styles.

Gale Virtual Reference Library Full text

Offers encyclopaedias and reference sources for research on many topics. You can access them from home twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, at the State Library or your local public library. We have selected 75 titles from all subject areas, such as Ancient civilizations reference library, Novels for students and Customs of Australia. Use them for quick look ups or doing homework assignments.

Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Full text

The first comprehensive online resource devoted to music research of all the world’s peoples. This is the online version of 10 print volumes first published in 1997. It comprising more than 9,000 pages of material, combined with entries by more than 700 expert contributors from all over the world, with hundreds of audio examples. This is the most complete body of work focused on world music.

JSTOR Full text

Multidisciplinary archive of high resolution scanned scholarly journals. It is not a current issues database. Because of JSTOR's archival mission, there is a gap, from 1 to 5 years, between the most recently published journal issue and the back issues available. Subject areas covered include economics, law, history, Asian studies, Middle Eastern studies, language, literature, music, film studies, performing arts, religion and visual arts.

Opera in Video offers more than 500 hours of streaming video, and includes classic performances from the top opera companies and documentaries on specific operas, composers, and companies cover the full range of operatic composition, from the Baroque to the twentieth century. It presents an overview of the most commonly studied operas in music history, opera literature, and performance classes. Multiple performances and stagings worldwide of the major operas allow for analysis of stage design, vocal techniques, roles, and musical interpretation across time periods, opera houses, and conductors.

Oxford History of Western Music Full text

Covers the evolution of Western classical music by one of the most prominent musicologists of our time, Richard Taruskin. The database includes 69 chapters, 500 images, and 1,800 musical examples from the updated paperback edition. v.1. Music from the earliest notations to the sixteenth century -- v.2. Formerly known as Grove Music Online, Oxford Music Online includes the full text of Grove Music Online, the Encyclopedia of Popular Music, the Oxford Companion to Music and the Oxford Dictionary of Music. It covers the entire history of music from Bach to the Blues, with broad coverage of musical styles. Includes biographies, sound archives, illustrations and links to music internet sites.
