Art and architecture

Queenslanders have access to a number of authoritative, subscription-only databases that are not available through Google or other free search engines.

Offsite access
To access these databases away from the library - from any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you must be a Queensland resident and:

  • own a State Library e-services card (register for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your card); 
    OR
  • be a member of a Queensland public library with a QPL account (register for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification)

Art Full Text Full text

Full text articles, abstracts and indexing from periodicals published throughout the world. Full text articles are available from 160 journals published from 1997 to date. Indexing & abstracts are from more than 480 periodicals from 1984 to date, many peer-reviewed.  Subject areas covered include archaeology, architecture, art history, contemporary art, costume, decorative arts, graphic arts and design, landscape architecture, motion pictures, museology, non-western art, photography and television. Indexing of art reproductions assists researchers to locate references to particular art works. Links within Art full text is available to Art Index Retrospective database which indexes over 600 publications from 1929-1984.

Art index retrospective Full text

Covering content for more than 55 years of art journalism, this retrospective resource includes articles, interviews, reviews and much more from over 600 publications.  Art Index Retrospective: 1929-1984 features coverage of English-language periodicals, yearbooks and museum bulletins published in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Dutch.

Berg Fashion Library Full text

Use this database to locate information on world dress and fashion. It covers all regions of the world from pre-history to the present. Resources include The Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion, The Dictionary of Fashion History, an A-Z of Fashion, close to 60 full text e-books and an image bank from the V&A Museum’s fashion collection. This database is suitable for researchers in disciplines such as anthropology, art history, history, sociology, geography, folklore, museum studies, theatre, and cultural studies as well as fashion and textiles.

Gale Virtual Reference Library Full text

Offers encyclopaedias and reference sources for research on many topics. You can access them from home twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, at the State Library or your local public library. We have selected 75 titles from all subject areas, such as Ancient civilizations reference library, Novels for students and Customs of Australia. Use them for quick look ups or doing homework assignments.

Humanities International Complete Full text

Full text of hundreds of journals, books and other published sources from around the world in the areas of history, language & literature, religion & philosophy, visual arts, performing arts and music. It includes all data from Humanities International Index (more than 2,000 journals and 2 million records).

JSTOR Full text

Multidisciplinary archive of high resolution scanned scholarly journals. It is not a current issues database. Because of JSTOR's archival mission, there is a gap, from 1 to 5 years, between the most recently published journal issue and the back issues available. Subject areas covered include economics, law, history, Asian studies, Middle Eastern studies, language, literature, music, film studies, performing arts, religion and visual arts.

Oxford Art Online Full text

Contains the art encyclopedia Grove Art Online (online version of the 34 volume Dictionary of Art), the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, The Oxford Companion to Western Art and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms. Grove Art Online covers all aspects of Western and non-Western art for all time periods. It gives access to thousands of images and also includes learning resources such as timelines.  Use this database to research all aspects of art history and to locate bibliographies for further research.

A comprehensive resource that contains over 175 dictionaries and reference titles covering the complete subject spectrum: from general reference and language to science and medicine, and from humanities and social sciences to business and professional.
