Queenslanders have access to a number of authoritative, subscription-only databases that are not available through Google or other free search engines.

Onsite access at your public library or State Library
Onsite access is easy - visit your local Queensland public library or the State Library of Queensland and connect using one of the onsite computers.  You may also be able to access these databases using the library's wireless service.

Offsite access
To access these databases away from the library - from any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you must be a Queensland resident and: 

  • own a State Library e-services card (apply for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your card); 
    OR
  • be a member of a Queensland public library with a QPL account (register for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification)

SAGE: Science and Geography Education

SAGE Online is a bibliographic database indexing popular journals in a broad range of subjects. Most journals indexed are Australian but selected overseas titles are also included. It covers practically all disciplines of knowledge, though the scientific ones are most heavily represented. The scope of the SAGE online database, and the range of journals included, is determined by the needs of schools and public libraries.

SCANFile is produced by the CSIRO Corporate Library and Information Service. This database includes indexes and abstracts to articles from over 200 Australian and International journals dealing with research and development, science and technology, innovation, and human resource management.

SNIPER: Searchable Networked Intellectual Property Electronic Resource

SNIPER provides information relating to IP Australia's core business areas, namely patents, trade marks and designs. SNIPER also includes other topics that impact on IP Australia's business, especially related intellectual property matters such as copyright, plant breeder's rights and domain names. These related matters are included if they relate to significant Australian or international trends and developments, or if they are significant to the field of intellectual property as a whole.

Tasmanian Convicts

A comprehensive list of all convicts transported to Tasmania, compiled from records at the Archives Office of Tasmania. Provides references to local convicts who arrived free or were born in Tasmania. Tasmanian Pioneers Index

Covers all births, deaths and marriages recorded by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages and now held by the Archives Office of Tasmania. Includes church records kept before the Government assumed responsibility for recording the events in 1838. Birth records provide the child's full name, parents' names including mother's maiden name, year of birth and place of registration. Death records provide full name of deceased person, date and place of death and name of the relative who was the informant. Marriage records provide name of spouse, year, and place of marriage. TAXABS: Australian Taxation Abstracts Database

Produced by Information Services, Australian Taxation Office.  Selectively indexes and abstracts journals such as The Bulletin and BRW, on topical issues relating to taxation - for example, child support, superannuation, accounting, business, and finance. Also indexes technical information on Capital Gains Tax, Fringe Benefits Tax, Goods and Services tax and citations to legislation (Rulings and cases).

An index to 200,000 landholders in the Irish counties Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone, 1823-1838. The Tithe Applotment Books are a record of the land survey taken to determine the amount of tax payable by landholders to the Church of England in pre-Famine Ireland.

William Smith O'Brien Petition

William Smith O'Brien was a rebel leader sentenced to death after the Irish uprising of 1848. A petition against his sentence was signed by people from every part of Ireland, Liverpool, Manchester and other parts of England between 1848 and 1849. This list provides the names, addresses and occupations of over 80,000 people who signed the petition. The majority of the names are from Ireland.
