Reference

Queenslanders have access to a number of authoritative, subscription-only databases that are not available through Google or other free search engines.

Onsite access at your public library or State Library
Onsite access is easy - visit your local Queensland public library or the State Library of Queensland and connect using one of the onsite computers.  You may also be able to access these databases using the library's wireless service.

Offsite access
To access these databases away from the library - from any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you must be a Queensland resident and: 

  • own a State Library e-services card (register for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your card); 
    OR
  • be a member of a Queensland public library with a QPL account (register for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification)

ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) Full text

The Australian Bureau of Statistics provides access to census data, demography statistics, migration, population, health, labour force and a select number of other ABS statistical publications. The full text of these publications can be found via the link on the main page to 'Publications' which can be browsed by subject or by publication number.

This database is produced by D W Thorpe. It provides bibliographical information on Australian and New Zealand books, publishers (and agents and distributors).

Contains detailed lists of Australian and New Zealand paintings sold at auction since 1973. Search by artist name to find prices realised and a detailed list of works sold. Some artist biographies are available. This is the online version of Australian Art Auction Records.

Carter’s Price Guide to Antiques and Collectables

Use this database to find prices of antiques and collectables or to help identify an object. This is the online equivalent of Carter’s price guide to Antiques in Australasia 2005 to the present, Carter’s Everything Vintage 2006 to the present, and many unpublished items. The database is heavily illustrated with high quality colour photographs and contains entries for a wide range of material, from ceramics & silverware to advertising & motor vehicles.

Gale Virtual Reference Library Full text

Offers encyclopaedias and reference sources for research on many topics. You can access them from home twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, at the State Library or your local public library. We have selected 75 titles from all subject areas, such as Ancient civilizations reference library, Novels for students and Customs of Australia. Use them for quick look ups or doing homework assignments.

Contains the online equivalent of the top-range language dictionaries of Oxford University Press for English/French, English/German, English/Italian,English/Russian and English/Spanish, plus an English/Chinese dictionary which is equivalent to the pocket version.
