Newspapers

Queenslanders have access to a number of authoritative, subscription-only databases that are not available through Google or other free search engines.

Onsite access at your public library or State Library
Onsite access is easy - visit your local Queensland public library or the State Library of Queensland and connect using one of the onsite computers. You may also be able to access these databases using the library's wireless service.

Offsite access
To access these databases away from the library - from any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you must be a Queensland resident and:

own a State Library e-services card (register for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your card);
OR

be a member of a Queensland public library with a QPL account (register for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification)

19th Century British Library Newspapers

A rich collection of primary source material, this database provides full runs of 48 titles from the 19th-century, totaling more than two million easily searchable pages. Here you will find a broad yet detailed view of British life in the 19th century; from business to sport, from politics to entertainment and the arts. Articles include monumental historic events, such as the battle of Trafalgar and the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as reports on the cricket match that started the Ashes, Jack the Ripper and Florence Nightingale.

Argus Newspaper Index

Indexes birth notices (1914-1931) and marriage notices (1931-1941) published in the Melbourne Argus. Provides full citation for the publication date of the notice.

AUSCHRON: Chronology of Australian Historic & Current Events

AUSCHRON indexes and abstracts journal articles, books, primary source documents, and the Australian daily newspapers to chronicle significant historical events, from 1992 to the present, on a wide range of topics such as politics, the arts, history and sport. Also included are citations to documents dating back to Dutch exploration from the 1600s. This database also includes some brief biographical information on prominent figures.

Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre

Contains full text of over 240 periodicals, and abstracts/indexing for nearly 400 periodicals focusing on the Australia/New Zealand region. Includes magazines, newspapers, newswires, reference books and company information from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, Asia, North America and Europe.

Australian Financial Review

Full-text access to the daily newspaper. Covers Australian business and financial news, analyses and political commentary. Search by keyword, date, contributor, headline, byline or newspaper section.

The Australian Newspapers Beta service allows access to historic Australian newspapers digitised as part of the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program.

Index New Zealand

Index with abstracts from selected New Zealand serial publications. Titles indexed range from popular magazines to more specialised journals. Subjects covered include general interest material, social research, current affairs, the arts and humanities. Index New Zealand is updated daily and comprehensive coverage of titles extends from 1987 onwards. Many New Zealand titles have also been retrospectively indexed.

Library PressDisplay

PressDisplay provides a full-colour, full-page collection of today's newspapers from around the world. Hundreds of titles are available from 70 countries in 37 languages. Newspapers can be located by country, title and language. Keyword searching is available across titles and within specific issues.

Margaret Gee's Media Guide

Margaret Gee's Australian Media Guide is a directory of the major Australian media outlets, including: television and radio stations; internet media; newspapers, newsletters, and magazines; and press agencies. It includes profiles and contact listings as well as circulation figures, publication details and base advertising rates.

Media Scan

Media scan is a bibliographic database of newspaper articles from the major dailies and is intended for secondary, TAFE, and university students and researchers. Papers indexed include The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian, The Herald Sun, The Bulletin, The Courier Mail, Sunday Mail, Adelaide Advertiser and The West Australian. This is an index only.

NewsBank

The NewsBank database provides access to fulltext newspaper articles from more than 230 Queensland, Australian and international titles. Newspapers from approximately 98 countries are available with a particular focus on Australian, American and English publications.
