Queenslanders have access to a number of authoritative, subscription-only databases that are not available through Google or other free search engines.

Onsite access at your public library or State Library
Onsite access is easy - visit your local Queensland public library, or the State Library of Queensland at South Bank, Brisbane, and connect using one of the onsite computers.  You may also be able to access these databases using the library's wireless service.

Offsite access
To access these databases away from the library - from any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you must be a Queensland resident and: 

  • own a State Library e-services card (apply for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your card); 
    OR
  • be a member of a Queensland public library with a QPL account (register for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification)

Naxos Music Library

A comprehensive collection of classical music online for listening (over 90,000 tracks and over 7,000 composers represented) . It includes the complete Naxos, Marco Polo and Da Capo catalogues of over 75,000 track, Genres include classical, historical, jazz, blues, world, folk, new age and Chinese music. Browsing by composer or category is possible. The advanced search engine allows searching by composer, genre, country, work title, period, year of composition, instrument, name of artist, or a combination of these. Most recent recordings are accompanied by scholarly notes.

Official Documents of the United Nations

Electronic repository for official documents published by the UN. The full text of documents is accessible in PDF format in all official languages of the UN. Documents are stored in two databases: UN documentation, with comprehensive coverage beginning in 1993 and selected earlier coverage, and UN resolutions, which includes the official records version of resolutions of the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council and Trusteeship Council since 1946.

A database of passengers arriving in Western Australia from Britain, Europe, Asia and other ports of Australia, 1898-1925. Can be searched by passenger's name, name of ship or date of arrival. PERIND: Periodicals Index

Produced by the National University of Singapore Library, PERIND indexes a range of journals on Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia and ASEAN. Although most of the journal articles date from 1980 onwards, the articles relating to medicine date from 1975, and law dates from 1932. From mid 1997, there are references to book chapters and conference papers.

Queensland Pioneer Index

An index to births, deaths and marriages in Queensland after compulsory civil registration was introduced in 1856.  Coverage extends up to the end of 1889. The index also includes records of baptism and burial (commencing in 1829) and marriage (commencing in 1839) which were collected from church registers by the Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages. Records show complete date for the event, and a reference number for the registration certificate. Birth and death records show parents' names and marriage records show the name of the spouse.
