Language and literature

Queenslanders have access to a number of authoritative, subscription-only databases that are not available through Google or other free search engines.

Onsite access at your public library or State Library
Onsite access is easy - visit your local Queensland public library or the State Library of Queensland and connect using one of the onsite computers.  You may also be able to access these databases using the library's wireless service.

Offsite access
To access these databases away from the library - from any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you must be a Queensland resident and: 

  • own a State Library e-services card (register for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your card); 
    OR
  • be a member of a Queensland public library with a QPL account (register for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification)

Covers various aspects of Australian Indigenous studies in English and in Australian Indigenous languages. Includes information on languages, culture, anthropology, archaeology, customary law, legal and social issues, health, education and the arts. Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre Full text

Contains full text of over 240 periodicals, and abstracts/indexing for nearly 400 periodicals focusing on the Australia/New Zealand region. Includes magazines, newspapers, newswires, reference books and company information from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, Asia, North America and Europe.

Columbia Granger's Poetry Database Full text

Granger's Poetry index includes 13,000 poems in full-text and 250,000 poem citations. There are also commentaries, biographies, bibliographies, and a glossary of terms. Where the full text of a poem is not included, the citation includes the details of where a copy can be found. Many anthologies of poetry are indexed.

DELTAA: The Database on English Teaching for Adults in Australia

Produced by the National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research (NCELTR) Macquarie University, DELTAA provides a comprehensive index to journal articles and electronic resources relating to English as a second language. Also includes citations to teaching, adult migrant learning and literacy.

Gale Virtual Reference Library Full text

Offers encyclopaedias and reference sources for research on many topics. You can access them from home twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, at the State Library or your local public library. We have selected 75 titles from all subject areas, such as Ancient civilizations reference library, Novels for students and Customs of Australia. Use them for quick look ups or doing homework assignments.

JSTOR Full text

JSTOR is a multidisciplinary archive of high resolution scanned scholarly journals. It is not a current issues database. Because of JSTOR's archival mission, there is a gap, from 1 to 5 years, between the most recently published journal issue and the back issues available. Subject areas covered include economics, law, history, Asian studies, Middle Eastern studies, language, literature, music, film studies, performing arts, religion and visual arts.

Literature Resource Center Full text

Access biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of more than 120,000 authors from every age and literary discipline. Scribner Writer's Series includes 15-20 page signed essays on more than 1,600 authors and literary genres drawn from 13 acclaimed Scribner print series. Twayne World, US, and English Authors each contains the full text of 200 frequently used Twayne Literary Masters books on individual World, US, or English authors, for a total of 600 full-text titles.

Macquarie Dictionary Full text

The Macquarie Dictionary is regarded as the standard reference on Australian English, providing access to the Macquarie Dictionary Fifth Edition and the latest edition of the Macquarie Thesaurus. It provides comprehensive and interactive searching of over 121,000 headwords and phrases and over 210,000 definitions and encyclopedic entries, etymologies for phrases, and illustrative material from Ozcorp.

Oxford English Dictionary Full text

The Oxford English Dictionary is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language, providing the meaning, history, and pronunciation of 600,000 words from across the English speaking world. This resource provides present day meanings, as well as the history of individual words, and of the language, traced through 3 million quotations, from classic literature to films scripts and cookery books.

Oxford Language Dictionaries Online Full text

Contains the online equivalent of the top-range language dictionaries of Oxford University Press for English/French, English/German, English/Italian,English/Russian and English/Spanish, plus an English/Chinese dictionary which is equivalent to the pocket version. There is also a quick translation tool for words in 13 languages. A virtual keyboard allows entry of characters in a range of scripts.

Index to Australian poetry anthologies held at the State Library of Queensland. Search by author, title, first line or key word. The results will give you details of the anthology in which you can find the poem. Some of these items will be located on the shelves and others can be requested using your e-services card.
