Queenslanders have access to a number of authoritative, subscription-only databases that are not available through Google or other free search engines.

Onsite access at your public library or State Library
Onsite access is easy - visit your local Queensland public library or the State Library of Queensland and connect using one of the onsite computers.  You may also be able to access these databases using the library's wireless service.

Offsite access
To access these databases away from the library - from any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you must be a Queensland resident and: 

  • own a State Library e-services card (apply for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your card); 
    OR
  • be a member of a Queensland public library with a QPL account (register for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification)

AHB-ATSIS: Australian Heritage Bibliography - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Subset

Index to Australian architectural journals held by the Stanton Library, North Sydney Council. ARTbibliographies Modern

Information on modern and contemporary arts dating from the late 19th century onwards. Provides full abstracts of journal articles, books, essays, exhibition catalogs, PhD dissertations, and exhibition reviews on all forms of modern and contemporary art, with approximately 12-13,000 new entries being added each year.

Art Full Text Full text

Full text articles, abstracts and indexing from periodicals published throughout the world. Full text articles are available from 160 journals published from 1997 to date. Indexing & abstracts are from more than 480 periodicals from 1984 to date, many peer-reviewed.  Subject areas covered include archaeology, architecture, art history, contemporary art, costume, decorative arts, graphic arts and design, landscape architecture, motion pictures, museology, non-western art, photography and television. Indexing of art reproductions assists researchers to locate references to particular art works. Links within Art full text is available to Art Index Retrospective database which indexes over 600 publications from 1929-1984.

Covering content for more than 55 years of art journalism, this retrospective resource includes articles, interviews, reviews and much more from over 600 publications.  Art Index Retrospective: 1929-1984 features coverage of English-language periodicals, yearbooks and museum bulletins published in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Dutch.

Use this database to locate information on world dress and fashion. It covers all regions of the world from pre-history to the present. Resources include The Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion, The Dictionary of Fashion History, an A-Z of Fashion, close to 60 full text e-books and an image bank from the V&A Museum’s fashion collection. This database is suitable for researchers in disciplines such as anthropology, art history, history, sociology, geography, folklore, museum studies, theatre, and cultural studies as well as fashion and textiles.

Use this database to find prices of antiques and collectables or to help identify an object. This is the online equivalent of Carter’s price guide to Antiques in Australasia 2005 to the present, Carter’s Everything Vintage 2006 to the present, and many unpublished items. The database is heavily illustrated with high quality colour photographs and contains entries for a wide range of material, from ceramics & silverware to advertising & motor vehicles.

Dance in Video offers more than 500 hours of streaming video which covers ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, experimental, and improvisational dance, as well as forerunners of the forms and the pioneers of modern concert dance. Included are classic performances from top ballet companies; experimental works from up-and-coming dance troupes; documentaries by and about leading choreographers; videos on dance training; and other items covering a wide range of twentieth-century dance styles.

FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals Plus

Contains over 400,000 article citations from more than 330 periodicals. It offers in-depth coverage of the world's foremost academic and popular film journals with many key titles available in full text including complete runs. It also indexes film archives' holdings of silent films as well as other documentation and bibliographic information held in film archives. It includes 4 databases: International Index to Film Periodicals; Treasures from the Film Archives; Film/TV Documentation Collections; FIAF Members' Publications.

Film Index International

Important reference source for film, containing data compiled by the British Film Institute Library over the last 60 years and also catalogue records of the National Film and Television archive. It contains information about more than 90,000 films dating back to the introduction of sound in 1930 (and further back in some cases) and details about more than 38,000 people. Most records include a comprehensive list of references to periodical articles.

Gordon's Print Price Annual

Contains 20 years of international print auction records. Sales records for illustrated books, livres d'artiste and books and periodicals with topographical and Japanese prints; and vintage, fine art and film posters. Also included on the CD-ROM are older print prices dating from the turn-of-the-century to 1985; a trilingual print lexicon in English, French and German; and a worldwide directory of auction houses, print dealers and photography dealers.

Humanities International Complete

JSTOR Full text

Multidisciplinary archive of high resolution scanned scholarly journals. It is not a current issues database. Because of JSTOR's archival mission, there is a gap, from 1 to 5 years, between the most recently published journal issue and the back issues available. Subject areas covered include economics, law, history, Asian studies, Middle Eastern studies, language, literature, music, film studies, performing arts, religion and visual arts.

Published by the Australian Film Television and Radio School, this is an online version of Media International Australia, formerly called Media Information Australia. Use it to search for information about the social sciences, especially in relation to the media. It includes scholarly and applied research on the media, telecommunications and the cultural industries. The primary focus is Australia, but there is also an international perspective.

Contains the art encyclopedia Grove Art Online (online version of the 34 volume Dictionary of Art), the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, The Oxford Companion to Western Art and The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms. Grove Art Online covers all aspects of Western and non-Western art for all time periods.
