Databases: Aa-Ap

Queenslanders have access to a number of authoritative, subscription-only databases that are not available through Google or other free search engines.

Onsite access at your public library or State Library
Onsite access is easy - visit your local Queensland public library or the State Library of Queensland and connect using one of the onsite computers.  You may also be able to access these databases using the library's wireless service.

Offsite access
To access these databases away from the library - from any computer connected to the internet (eg home or office) - you must be a Queensland resident and: 

  • own a State Library e-services card (register for an e-services card allowing 5 days to receive your card); 
    OR
  • be a member of a Queensland public library with a QPL account (register for a QPL account - immediate access after email verification)

Census data, demography statistics, migration, population, health, labour force and a select number of other ABS statistical publications. The full text of these publications can be found via the link on the main page to 'Publications' which can be browsed by subject or by publication number.

A guide to educational institutions and related organisations, listing over 700 organisations in Australia and New Zealand.  It includes a subject index for associations. AGCI: Australasian Genealogical Computer Index

A surname index to 3.9 million mainly Australian and New Zealand records of the 19th and 20th centuries. The index draws on records from cemetery transcriptions, parish registers, newspapers, rate books, war memorials, and shipping records.

AGCI Volume 2: Australasian Genealogical Computer Index: NSW Government Gazettes 1832-1863

Volume two of AGCI contains an index to over 830,000 names mentioned in a variety of notices published in the New South Wales Government Gazette between 1832 and 1863. These notices include convicts, ship and military deserters, land transactions, unclaimed letters, government appointments and bankruptcies. The State Library holds the New South Wales Government Gazette on microfilm and/or the original published books.

AGIS - ATSIS: The Attorney-General's Information Service - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Subset

This database is a subset of AGIS. Citations and abstracts to legal issues such as Native Title, Aboriginal deaths in custody, customary law, and Aboriginals and the criminal system. Also covers Indigenous social welfare issues, discrimination, and reconciliation. Source documents are from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, with selected articles from Canada, United States, and the United Kingdom.

AGIS Plus Text Full text

Indexing and full text database with access to the scanned images (in pdf) of journal articles from published material on all aspects of law. Based on 'AGIS', the Attorney-General's Information Service, produced by the AGIS Section of the Lionel Murphy Library, Attorney-General's Department, Canberra, and published by RMIT Publishing.
Subjects: administrative law, banking, companies and securities, constitutional law, copyright law, criminal law, environmental law, family law, human rights, international law, legal aid, and trade practices.

AMI: Australasian Medical Index

Produced by the National Library of Australia. Indexes and abstracts over 160 Australian health and medical journals not generally indexed in MEDLINE. From 2001 AMI has been indexing some journals covered in MEDLINE. Entries include journal articles, conference proceedings, government reports, selected books and the full text of most National Health and Medical Research Council sessions. Contains clinical material.

Ancestry

Contains a large number of databases and tools for family history research. Some of their major databases include 19th century census records for England, Wales and Scotland, an index to births, deaths and marriages for England and Wales for 1837-2005, Australian electoral rolls (except South Australia) for 1901-1936, British phone books for 1880-1984 and assorted parish records for England. Also features a learning centre with tips on getting started, organising and charting your family tree and how to read old handwriting.
