Do you know when your grandparents were born? Are you looking for a death in the 1890s in Queensland? If the answer is yes, you may wish to look at births, deaths and marriages records.

The State Library holds the indexes published by the Australian state registries of births, deaths and marriages on microfiche as well as CD-ROM. Other resources available are:

  • Early parish records
  • England and Wales births, deaths and marriages civil registration indexes
  • Cemetery records

Also of use is the extensive historical newspapers collection on microfilm, which can be used to locate further information through such items as obituaries as well as funeral, death, birth and marriage notices.

How do I access items in this collection?

Access at the State Library of Queensland

Access off-site

If you are at home, you can access selected offsite databases to search for electronic journal, magazine and newspaper articles. You will be prompted to login with your e-services card or QPL account.
Some State Library items are available for loan to other libraries. Contact your local library for information about interlibrary loan and copy services.
