Public and Indigenous Library Services
The Public and Indigenous Library Services program of the State Library of Queensland provides support as an advocate and financial partner to the state's extensive public library network. The State Library continues to meet its service obligations to public libraries throughout Queensland. Over 340 library and Indigenous Knowledge Centre (IKC) service points currently benefit from this support in their efforts to meet the library needs of Queensland residents.
Working with Local Government to promote and facilitate the enhancement of public library services, our major responsibilities are:
- to provide grants to Local Governments operating Independent library services
- to manage the Country Lending Service
- to provide advisory services, publications and training on aspects of library management and service development
- to distribute resources statewide to meet the needs of the whole community, including specialised resources, reference services and interlibrary loans
- to facilitate public library networking and resource-sharing throughout Queensland, including the effective application of information technologies to enhance accessibility to global resources
- to implement the strategic vision Expanding Horizons: positioning Queensland public libraries for the future 2008-2012.
These services are offered across the state, maximising the availability of resources over a large geographic area. Together with Local Government support, they foster the growth and development of a high quality public library network for all.
