Indigenous Library Services

State Library of Queensland (SLQ), in partnership with many other organisations, aims to provide statewide library services to Queensland Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders.  Indigenous Library Services (ILS) advocates for the participation and inclusion of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in all library services.

Library services are provided through Indigenous Knowledge Centres (IKCs) and through public libraries across Queensland.  Improving service and increasing employment and training opportunities in libraries for Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders are key strategies for future development.

ILS also works to ensure that Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and cultural heritage are fully and respectfully represented both in public libraries and in the State Library.  The Indigenous Advisory Committee to the Library Board of Queensland provides a formal mechanism for guidance and advice.

kuril dhagun - Indigenous Knowledge Centre

State Library of Queensland (SLQ) includes kuril dhagun Indigenous Knowledge Centre located on Level 1, overlooking the Brisbane River. It is part of the physical and virtual network of State Library of Queensland supported Indigenous Knowledge Centres throughout Queensland. At kuril dhagun you can experience a wide range of examples of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, from the traditional to the contemporary. The Centre acknowledges and represents intangible knowledge and the vibrant forms in which it can be carried and transmitted.

A dynamic program of changing events and activities is offered in kuril dhagun, responding to local interests and current and historical events. The kuril dhagun knowledge touch screens allow visitors to hear Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories and languages, see online exhibitions and listen to interviews. Community groups are invited to use the space including the meeting room and outdoor Talking Circle (with fire-pit) for events.

The concept and design were developed over a three year period in close consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representatives from throughout Queensland. It is the first for any State Library in Australia.
