Our organisation

The Library Board of Queensland is the legal entity which operates the State Library of Queensland under the requirements of the Libraries Act 1988 (Queensland) [new window http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/LEGISLTN/CURRENT/L/LibrarArchA88.pdf.] Administratively, the State Library sits within the portfolio responsibilities of the Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the the Arts. The State Library's history now extends back for more than a century, having begun in 1902 with the establishment of the Public Library of Queensland.

Library Board of Queensland

The governing body of the State Library of Queensland, the Library Board has one committee and six advisory groups to advise and inform it on issues which arise within the scope of each body. They are the Audit and Risk Management Committee and the Collections, Indigenous, Information Management, Multicultural Services, Public Libraries and Younger People in Libraries Advisory Groups.

Lea Giles-Peters - State Librarian

The State Librarian is responsible for the proper and sound management of the State Library of Queensland, under the authority of the Library Board of Queensland. The State Librarian provides strategic advice and direction to the Library Board; plans and develops new initiatives, services and programs; manages the resources of the State Library, initiates strategic partnerships and leads the State Library of Queensland.

Vicki McDonald, Director, Client Services and CollectionsClient Services and Collections

Vicki McDonald - Director, Client Services and Collections

The Client Services and Collections Program provides clients of the State Library with physical and virtual access to the State’s diverse collections and services. Collection strengths include the Australian Library of Art, the John Oxley Library of Queensland history, family history and one of Australia’s foremost music collections. Services include onsite and virtual reference assistance, (including free Statewide access to a number of electronic databases), free internet access, training programs, business information, photographic and digital reproduction, preservation and conservation.

Public Library Services

Shelley Webb - Acting Director, Public Library Services

Public Library Services is an integral part of the State Library of Queensland, providing support as an advocate and financial partner to the State's extensive public library network. The State Library leads and facilitates the Smart Library Network, including the development and dissemination of models of best practice, and continues to meet the State Library's service obligations to public libraries throughout Queensland. Over 330 library service points currently benefit from this support in their efforts to meet the library needs of Queensland residents.

Bruce MacGregor - Director, Organisational Effectiveness

The Organisational Effectiveness program provides a range of organisational services that underpin and support the State Library's activities. These services include policy advice, planning and research; human resource services; financial and administrative services; facilities management and venue hire; information and communications technology; administration of the Public Library Grants Scheme and a commercial business service, Qld. Comm Books. The program also provides an operational link to the Office of the Queensland Library Foundation and the Corporate Administration Agency.

Public Programs

Johnathan Parsons, Director, Public ProgramsJonathan Parsons - Director, Public Programs

The State Library of Queensland's Public Programs draws inspiration from the State Library's extensive collections and demonstrates its key role as a dynamic knowledge and ideas hub. The program delivers this through exhibitions, performance, film, forums, symposia and lectures with a strong focus on Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders, children and youth. The program has a range of state of the art spaces including two large exhibition spaces. Three more intimate exhibition areas include the Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery and Talbot Family Treasures Wall, plus two auditoriums and the magical Queensland Terrace which service the State Library's extensive talks, performances and film programs.

Indigenous Library Services

Robert Barty - Executive Manager, Indigenous Library Services

Indigenous Library Services aims to provide accessible statewide library services to Indigenous Queenslanders. Service delivery and development focuses on building individual capacity through lifelong learning, strengthening cultural identity, social and economic development, and social cohesion for families and communities. A key part of the ILS Strategy is the establishment of Indigenous Knowledge Centres in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities throughout Queensland.

Queensland Library Foundation

Gaelle Lindrea - Foundation Director

The primary role of the Queensland Library Foundation is to support the State Library in its endeavours to help preserve Queensland's cultural heritage and to enhance the special collections of films, photographs, music, rare books, maps, oral history and artworks.

The Edge

Collette Brennan - Creative Director

The Edge offers a dynamic combination of children and young people's spaces, programs and events at the State Library of Queensland. The Edge is designed to foster children and young people's social, intellectual and cultural development and provide for lifelong learning and creative and critical thinking. The Edge program is currently operational in the newly developed State Library of Queensland (for example The Corner) and through online and other services via public libraries across Queensland. The Edge program will also be delivered through the former Queensland Theatre Company building, adjacent to the State Library, South Bank. This new site will be a dynamic combination of programs that engage children and young people in content generation from the traditional to the most contemporary creative forms and media.
