John Oxley Library Award
Winner 2009
Congratulations to Dr Raymond Evans for his outstanding work documenting the state’s past. He taught for many years at the University of Queensland and is currently an adjunct professor in the Centre for Public Culture and Ideas at Griffith University. Professor Evans has been writing about Queensland and Australian history since 1965. His book A History of Queensland (Cambridge University Press, 2007) was short-listed for the 2008 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for non-fiction.
He has made an outstanding contribution to the appreciation of Queensland history, not only through his celebrated academic career, but more broadly through community seminars and workshops promoting the value of historical knowledge to the Queensland public’s understanding of themselves and each other.
The first two sessions of Professor Evans' recent Discovering Queensland Learning Program at the State Library of Queensland were highly successful and he will lead further Queensland history courses for the public with A History of Queensland being the focal text of the course.
