Images of the new State Library

State Library of Queensland

The highly-anticipated redeveloped State Library of Queensland building opened to the public at South Bank Cultural Centre on Saturday 25 November, 2006 amid much celebration.

There have been over one million visits to the State Library since opening in the first year as people have explored the five levels of unique spaces offering research, information services and public programs.

On 25 October 2007 the State Library of Queensland building was voted Australia’s ‘Building of the Year’ at the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) Awards ceremony in Alice Springs with accolades going to architects Donovan Hill Peddle Thorp.

"The State Library is culturally and climatically a Queenslander - partly grand library and part community hall with its interiors opening like the chapters of a good book"

RAIA Judges

The RAIA Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture is widely regarded as Australia’s leading award for public buildings. Past recipients have included the Queensland Art Gallery, Sydney’s Olympic Park Railway Station and the new Parliament House in Canberra. The State Library building also took out the RAIA Emil Sodersten Award for Interior Architecture.

More information on the RAIA awards can be found at Royal Australian Institute of Architecture's website [new window http://www.architecture.com.au/i-cms?page=9829].

You are invited to take a tour, see a film, research a topic, use wireless Internet access, explore an exhibition or take a blogging workshop in one of Australia's best buildings. There are many reasons to visit the State Library.
