Library Board of Queensland
The Library Board is the governing body of the State Library of Queensland and draws its powers from the Libraries Act 1988. The object of this Act is to contribute to the cultural, social and intellectual development of all Queenslanders.
The Library Board has adopted a Code of Conduct which all members uphold and which has been approved by the Minister for Education and Minister for the Arts.
The Library Board is committed to improving access to information and knowledge for all Queenslanders. The Board periodically meets outside of Brisbane to keep informed about local issues and to strengthen relationships with local councils and the community.
Library Board membership
- Ms Jane Bertelsen, who has had extensive experience as a senior executive with local, regional, state and international organisations, and over twenty years experience in project analysis and policy development and has been continuously involved in decision-making, advice and implementation activities in the management of major organisations (Chairperson)
- Ms Margaret Strelow, former Mayor of Rockhampton
- Dr Grace Sarra, Senior Lecturer in Creative Industries at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Caboolture
- Mr Max Lenoy, Lecturer in the School of Education at James Cook University, and Director of the Remote Area Teacher Education Program
- Professor Stuart Cunningham, Professor of Media and Communications at QUT, and Director of the Australian Research Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation
- Mr John Birmingham, Queensland author
- Ms Janice Rickards, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Information Services at Griffith University
- Mr Matthew J McDonnell, partner at KPMG
- Mr Aladin Rahemtula, Supreme Court Librarian
Under the Libraries Act 1988 (Queensland) the State Librarian, Lea Giles-Peters, must attend all meetings of the Board unless excused or precluded by the board.
Library Board committees
The Library Board appoints committees to advise and inform the Library Board on issues that arise within the scope of the committee. The role and functions of the committees are currently under review.
Advisory Groups
The Library Board appoints a number of Advisory Groups which, whilst not undertaking the functions of the Board, provide strategic advice and act as a consultative arm to the broader community. The role and functions of the advisory groups are currently under review.

Lea Giles-Peters
Lea Giles-Peters commenced her appointment as State Librarian in October 2001. Lea was the first woman to be appointed to the position. Lea has had an extensive career with senior management and academic positions in librarianship, government, education and information systems. Lea represents the State Library of Queensland on the Council of Australian State Libraries (CASL) and is formerly a member of the Board of Directors of Public Libraries Australia. Lea serves on a number of Boards and committees for government and educational organisations, including the Brisbane City Council, Griffith University and the University of Queensland. She is a member of the Lyceum Club in Brisbane.
Lea has a particular interest in the role of libraries in community capacity building, Indigenous library services and women and leadership. Previous positions include Director of the Northern Territory Library and Information Service; Assistant Secretary, Northern Territory Department of Housing and Local Government and Manager, CSIRO Library Network and Information Services.
