Tree of Knowledge

Knowledge and memory

On Friday 13 November, 2009, the Honorable Anna Bligh MP, Premier of Queensland and, at the time,  Minister for the Arts, officiated at the planting of a sapling from the Tree of Knowledge at the State Library of Queensland.

The Tree of Knowledge at Barcaldine is an icon of historical significance to Queensland and Australia. Following the poisoning of the original tree in 2006, cuttings held in storage were used to make new cuttings. These were grafted onto hybrid rootstocks at Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries Gympie Forestry Research Centre to propagate strains of the original tree.

It is fitting that the Tree of Knowledge is planted beside the State Library, home to the John Oxley Library - custodian of Queensland’s documentary history. The John Oxley Library holds the original world heritage-listed Manifesto of the Queensland Labour Party to the People of Queensland (dated 1882) amongst many other state and national treasures. The Manifesto belongs to the history of the international Labour movement.

The Tree of Knowledge at the State Library represents a significant addition to Queensland’s rich history.
