Construction starts on Digital Centre for Young People

Construction has started on ‘The Edge’ – a digital facility for young people at the Cultural Centre, South Bank. Premier Anna Bligh said the $7.9 million building program means the former auditorium building will be transformed into a new facility for digital culture, ideas and innovation.

Memories of the Ekka captured in a new exhibition at the State Library

The iconic “Ekka” is immortalised in a series of drawings by William Robinson AO, one of Australia’s most highly regarded contemporary artists, in a new exhibition at the State Library of Queensland.

Opening on 27 March, William Robinson Showcase features the Ekka series 1–20, which captures the essence of the Royal Queensland Show with warmth and wit, highlighting the character and frenetic atmosphere of this well-loved Queensland event.

Online workshops huge success for State Library

Looking @2.0 is a free, online course presented by the State Library in partnership with public libraries throughout the state. A Queensland first on this scale, the course is designed to help members of the community navigate the world of online technologies, to keep up with their kids, to stay safe online and to utilise all the positive aspects of web 2.0.

It's GAME ON at the State Library of Queensland

Deputy Premier Paul Lucas today launched the international exhibition GAME ON at the State Library of Queensland and invited Queenslanders to come and play. 

"GAME ON, a touring exhibition from London's prestigious Barbican Art Gallery, celebrates the pop culture phenomenon of gaming," Mr Lucas said.

It looks at the design, art, politics and evolution involved in video gaming.

Arts Minister Rod Welford today announced the State Library of Queensland will host a major international videogames exhibition this summer.

"The State Library has secured GAME ON, a major exhibition from the UK which looks at the vibrant history and culture of videogames from 1962 to 2008," Mr Welford said.

State Library obtains rare images charting Hope Vale history

State Librarian Lea Giles-Peters today announced a major new acquisition by the State Library of Queensland of a significant photographic collection charting the development of the Hope Vale community from 1958-83.

Ms Giles-Peters said Lutheran Pastor Ivan Roennfeldt’s donation of his collection of 2,000 photographs and slides coincided with the 50th anniversary of Hope Vale’s Lutheran Church.

Pastor Roennfeldt, 83, who is now retired and living in Brisbane, was on the Board of the Lutheran Church which oversaw the Hope Vale Mission. He visited the Mission many times over 25 years from 1958, and photographed the community and local landmarks.

Letters and diaries unearth a bygone era in Northern Queensland

Discover Queensland as it was more than 150 years ago in a new exhibition at the State Library of Queensland.

Making Do: Pioneering Gentry in North Queensland, located in the Talbot Family Treasures Wall, reveals the novelty and hardships of Queensland country life in the1800s.

A very personal display, Making Do unearths the Rawsons and Archers - two astonishingly influential British pioneering families seeking fortune and adventure in northern Queensland. It reveals their stories and legacies through diaries, illustrations, photo albums, letters and books from the State Library's John Oxley Library.

Sunshine Coast Mum wins laptop in Online Database Challenge

The State Library of Queensland announces the lucky winner of their 2008 Online Database Challenge.

Buderim mother Manon Niven is the proud owner of a new Toshiba laptop worth over $1,000.

A regular borrower from the Maroochy Shire Library, Manon was renewing her books online when she saw the competition.

Mrs Niven was selected randomly from the 3,200 entries received from members of the State Library and public libraries across Queensland. Entrants had to answer four questions using the State Library’s Gale Virtual Reference Library database.

Cairns wordsmiths have two minutes to make their mark on the mic

Get ready for an explosion of words, rhymes and beats when the 2008 Australian Poetry Slam heads to town as part of the annual Festival of Cairns.

With more than $10,000 in cash and prizes on offer, the State Library of Queensland is encouraging all poets, hip-hop artists and outspoken wordsmiths to polish their rhymes and lyrics and enter their local heat at the Tanks Art Centre, 46 Collins Ave, Edge Hill on Wednesday 10 September from 7.30pm (signup 30 mins prior).

The 2007 Cairns heat attracted Queensland’s biggest Slam crowd and unearthed the talent of National Finalist Gudrun Philipp.

Architectural wonders 'showcased' at Queensland State Library

'Showcase' celebrates around 70 architectural projects receiving commendations in the 2008 Queensland Architecture Awards – run by the Australian Institute of Architects' Queensland Chapter. The exhibition is made up of all projects receiving Commendations from around the state and identifies Award winners as announced at the State Awards held in Brisbane on Friday 25 July 2008.

The exhibition runs in The Studio, State Library of Queensland, Stanley Place, Brisbane from 15 August to 1 September 2008.

Toowoomba wordsmiths have two minutes to make their mark on the mic

The Australian Poetry Slam returns to Toowoomba in 2008 for another explosive battle of words, rhymes and beats.

With more than $10,000 in cash and prizes on offer, Toowoomba Library is encouraging all poets, hip-hop artists and outspoken wordsmiths to polish their rhymes and lyrics and enter the Toowoomba heat at Bon Amici Café, 191 Margaret St from 7.30pm on Thursday 4 September.
