State Librarian Lea Giles-Peters said the Animation Station holiday program encourages children and families to delve into their imagination, exploring stories and the many different ways of bringing them to life.

The Summer Reading Club, www.summerreadingclub.slq.qld.gov.au, is a state-wide program run by the State Library of Queensland, offering children from 0 to 16 years a broad range of activities to inspire and entertain during the holiday period.

State Librarian Lea Giles-Peters said research has shown that children who read for pleasure are the best readers.

Through the eyes of Australia’s top cartoonists, the twists and turns of a year in politics is captured in Behind the Lines: The Year’s Best Cartoons 2009, opening at the State Library on 11 December.

From October 2010, visitors will see the State Library of Queensland in a new light with artworks embedded in collections spaces and public areas. Artists from Australia and China have been developing site-specific art works for Light from Light, an exhibition that will be mirrored simultaneously at the Shanghai Library in China. Via web cam, audiences in Brisbane and Shanghai will be able to experience the same artworks in each other’s location over 7000km away.

The State Library of Queensland and Nielson Properties today announced the highly anticipated guest speaker for the second Nielson Design Lecture to be held at the State Library as part of the Unlimited Festival on 6 October 2010.

Sarah Boothroyd has been presented with the prestigious State Library of Queensland Young Writers Award and $2,000 for her short story The Road to the River.

Sarah accepted the award at the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards ceremony, held in late August at the State Library's South Bank building.

State Librarian Lea Giles-Peters said Dr Rickertt, University of Queensland Fryer Library librarian and author of Resistance on the Line, was awarded the fellowship to research and write a biography of Ernest Lane, titled Ernie Lane, Australian Labour’s Resolute Rebel.

The diversity of the State Library of Queensland’s collections will be showcased when the New Treasures exhibition opens on 13 March. 

New Treasures brings together more than 40 extraordinary items recently added to the State Library’s collection – revealing how the collection continues to grow in size, scope and diversity.

Premier and Minister for the Arts Anna Bligh today officially opened Queensland’s 18th Indigenous Knowledge Centre, in the remote community of Hammond Island in the Torres Strait.

This summer the State Library of Queensland is setting sail for a worldwide holiday adventure. From 2 to 24 January, young explorers can traverse the globe through an international extravaganza of music, craft, activities, games and exhibitions.
